Shutterbug Monday!

Lighting plays such an important part of our picture taking. The light of day and night may all look the same to the human eye, but the qualities of natural light change throughout the day. Here are a few tips to consider when trying to decide which time of day is right for your photo!

Midday--> The harsh light of midday is not the best for taking pictures. Subjects often looked washed out and strong contrasts can make for difficult exposures. The exception to this is an overcast sky at midday provides a soft, diffused light and few unwanted shadows.

Early Morning/Late Afternoon-->These are the two best times of day for nearly all subjects. An hour after sunrise and an hour bnefore sunet provide light that gives a scene a dramatic glow.

Dawn/Dusk--> Before the sun appears over the horizon, it starts to lighten the sky with a soft, blue light and as it begins to rise, the light becomes pink and gold. Use this light to create misty landscapes and dreamy silhouettes. To compensate for the limited light, use a slower shutter speed.

Night--> New creative possibilities arise about 30 minutes after the sun goes down. At this time, there is still enough light for shapes to create dramatic landscapes.

Post a link here to a photo that you've taken using different 'natural' light to get interesting effects. You have until July 31st to post the link, and I'll choose a winner for a RAK from me!

Last weeks Shutterbug winner is 'CHELLE' Congrats!! PM your address to Denise so she can get your prize out to you!!!

15 Easy Stitching Techniques

Hi everyone, Ellen here on for the Blog boss, sure hope I do her justice :)

I found a great article by Ali Edwards in Creating Keepsakes that suggested more ways to incorporate sewing on your layouts or cards:

1. Stitch a simple line on just one side of an accent
2. Stitch a basic shape(you might want to use removable adhesive to help keep these in place)
3. Stitch several embellishments in a row. butterflys come to mind for me!
4. Vary stitch legth and width of your stitches
5. Try stitching stamps or rub-ons. if you don't have a sewing machine you could invest in a set of stamps to help you or even rub ons are great to achieve this look.
6. Stitch a boarder around your page, it doens't have to be straight either, sometimes the messy look is more fitting for the lo or card.
7. Stitch journaling lines. stitching line straight or curvy is a simple way to desingate a place on your project to tell the story.
8. Stitch wavy lines. this will give a more organic look to your project. repeating these organic lines somewhere else on your page will give extra visal interest.
9. Stitch grid lines. adhere your photos first then run the lo threw the sewing machine, you could stitch the grid first then add content. (Zig Zag stitch would be great for this!
10. Stitch a quilted look. Cut several of your favourite scraps into squares or rectangles and place them together to form a quilted area on your lo. use each square as a home for an embellishment.
11. Stitch an accent shape. you can also do this by had with many of the templates that are available now.
12. Hand stitch words. you can do this free hand or if you love a font you could stitch around it and this will give your lo different look.
13. Stitch a photo frame. this will give your pictures a subtle look.
14. Attach small accents with embroidery floss. something as simple as cross stitch x's will give that homemade look to a lo! and you can match your floss with the colours of your lo!
15. Attach large accents with embroidery floss. you can stitch around a big accent or if you prefer in the accent, as it is large you should stay with a large stitch.

Some stitching tips:
Start basic.
Select a few basic colours of thread and embroidery floss. Choose a simple palette that will work on the majority of your projects.
You don't need a new machine to play with sewing in on your pages.
You might have one sitting around home that might need to be pulled out for some fun!

Find a home for your sewing machine that's outside your closet! this way you will think to use it!

Read your manual.
You will definitely benefit from taking time to learn the capabilities of your sewing machine. You should also be familiar with how to keep your machine clean. You will also have to have different needles for fabric and paper. the paper will dull your sewing needle on the machine.

Don't feel your stitching has to be functional.
You don't have to always stitch one thing to another, stitches look great a decoration~

So there you have it. Hope you will be inspired to pull out an old machine and stitch on your lo or cards!

Shutterbug Monday!

Here we are, at the beginning of yet another week~ Hope you are all enjoying your summer...we've had some scorching hot weather. Hopefully you are all finding some time to create as well!

Let's talk distressing today. Most likely we've all distressed on our layouts at some point. Inked the edges, tore the paper, used a distressing tool to rough things up. Have you ever thought of doing that to your photo's?

I have never distressed a photo...and I'm not really sure why other then I guess I just never thought about it before. Here are some cool ways to get a vintage look to your pictures

1. Crumple all or part of the photo then smooth it out
2. Sand the edges using fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding block
3. Tear a jagged edge or corner
4. Dry emboss a frame around your photo or words within the image and the raised lines.
5. Create a glazed or crackled effect with layers of embossing powder or Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel.
6. Ink the edges with an ink pad. For an even more aged look, cover the image with walnut ink.
7. Paint the edges of your photo and then sand the dried paint.

We would love to see how you've distressed photo's...so please leave us a link so we can check it out!!

Have a wonderful day :)

Since most of us use digital cameras...

I thought i'd focus on that this week!!!

File Formats--> File formats come into play when the camera saves your image and again when you use image-editing software. May image-editing programs give you the option of saving your edited image in the programs own file format but be careful " the files may not be readable if you take them elsewhere for printing.

JPEG--> The most common file format saved by cameras , it's smaller files conserve space and save quickly but sacrifice some detail. If you plan to print photo's from your images, choose the highest-quality setting while shooting. JPEGs are the mos recognized format for pinting and sharing photo's.

TIFFS--> If you use image-editing software, it helps to save JPEGs and TIFF files before doing lots of editiing. Although TIFF files are larger and slower, an image saved in TIFF allows you to crop, eidt and save your image with losing image quality. Use it when you want to edit the image without losing data with each 'save'

RAW-->Some higher-end cameras offer RAW format, which takes data files directly from a digital camera's image sensors. RAW iamges are called "digital negatives" because you can take the RAW image and develop or edit it to create your finished photograph. These files are much larger and thus take more time to open and save, but you end up with high-quality images. You also will have to open RAW images with a special program, usually a plug - in for your image editing software.
